On January 15, 2024, The Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame introduced the inaugural Naismith Hall of Fame Ice Cube Impact Award, an honor celebrating Ice Cube’s remarkable contributions to professional basketball and his dedication to community service.

This groundbreaking award, symbolizes the acknowledgment of individuals who, like Ice Cube, leverage the basketball to create positive change in their communities. More than just a sports honor, this award recognizes those who score points not only in games but in making a lasting impact beyond the court.

As an annual accolade, the Naismith Hall of Fame Ice Cube Impact Award aims to spotlight individuals within the basketball community who have not only excelled in the sport but have also left an indelible mark on the neighborhoods they serve. Ice Cube himself will chair the selection committee for future award nominations, ensuring that the recipients embody the spirit of the award.

The conversation will focus on the world of professional and college basketball, with an emphasis on how players can be empowered to own not just the court but the game.

Jamaica’s Reggae Girlz World Cup Send-off Celebration (@Reggae_Girlz_F)

Reggae-Girlz-Jamaica-Women-Soccer-Team-Football-World-Cup-Reggae-Girls-810x686 The Reggae Girlz made history by becoming the first Caribbean country to qualify for a FIFA Women’s World Cup. The 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup is scheduled for June 1 – July 1, 2019 in France. The Reggae Girlz will take on Brazil on June 9th, Italy on June 14th and Australia on June 18th during the Group Stages.

The JWNT will begin their 2019 World Cup Send-Off Tour with a game in Jamaica against Panama on May 19th. The organizers are pleased to announce the Reggae Girlz Foundation (RGF), City of Miramar and the Vice Mayor Alexandra Davis will be hosting the Reggae Girlz on the second stop before they depart for Europe, with a week of celebration activities from May 20th through to the 24th.

The following list of fundraising and celebration activities have been planned under the patronage of the Consul General Oliver Mair and the Jamaica Tourist Board, as well as under the mandate of the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) (not all inclusive):

May 20, 2019- City of Miramar Welcome – at the Ft. Lauderdale Airport that will be open to the public.

May 21, 2019- City of Miramar Sports Summit – hosted by Vice Mayor Alexandra Davis

May 22, 2019- Pep Rally – hosted by County Line Chiropractic, Countyline Road location. 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm.

May 22, 2019- VIP Fundraising Reception Cocktail – hosted by Consul General Oliver Mair, Vice Mayor Davis and Cedella Marley (Global Ambassador for Jamaica Football)

May 23, 2019- Reggae Girlz 2019 World Cup Send-Off Fun-Day Celebration – hosted by the Reggae Girlz Foundation, City of Miramar and Vice Mayor Alexandra Davis. A fun-filled evening of food, drinks and music, featuring a double header football match (additional details to be announced pending approvals).

Arguably the most naturally gifted athlete the world has ever seen, Usain St Leo Bolt, created history at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio when he achieved the ‘Triple Triple’, three gold medals at three consecutive Olympic Games. Usain’s journey to worldwide stardom started at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing where he won the 100m, 200m and 4x100m, all in world record times. He followed this up with three gold medals in the same events at the 2012 Olympic Games in London to write his name in the history books as the world’s fastest man. Then one day before his 30th birthday he completed the same triple at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio to cement his legacy as a legend in world sport.

In addition to his nine Olympic Games gold medals Usain won eleven World T&F Championships titles. He completed the 100m, 200m and 4x100m sweeps at the 2009 World Championships in Berlin, 2013 World Championships in Moscow and 2015 World Championships in Beijing. He won the 200m and 4x100m at the World Championships in Daegu in 2011.

Usain currently holds the world records in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m with times of 9.58 secs, 19.19 secs and 36.84 secs. His first world record was in the 100m in 2008 when he posted a time of 9.72 secs in New York. He lowered it to 9.69 secs at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing and then to 9.58 secs at the 2009 World Championships in Berlin. He holds the three fastest times ever run 9.28, 9.64 and 9.69. Also in 2008 in Beijing he set a new 200m world record taking 0.02 off Michael Johnson’s previous mark with a time of 19.30 secs. He lowered this time further to 19.19 secs in Berlin in 2009, a time which may stand for years to come. On the world all-time list Usain holds five of the top ten times ever in the 200m. As part of the Jamaican 4x100m team Usain broke three world records – 37.10 secs in Beijing in 2008, 37.04 secs in Daegu in 2011 and 36.84 in London in 2012. Jamaican teams with Usain have the seven fastest 4x100m times in history.

Usain has been awarded the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year on four occasions (2009, 2010, 2013 & 2017); the IAAF Male Athlete of the Year six times (2008, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2016) as well as many awards in many countries in all corners of the world. He has his own clothing line in conjunction with Puma; his own watch made by Hublot; his own restaurant ‘Tracks & Records’ in Kingston, Jamaica; his own shaving company Champion Shave, his own insoles company Enertor; the ‘Usain Bolt Foundation’ and endorses some of the top brands in the world.

The Caribbean American Heritage Foundation of Texas (CAHFT) announces that I AM BOLT a documentary about the life of Jamaican Olympic athlete Usain Bolt, will headline its 2^nd Annual Houston Caribbean Film Festival (HCFF). The Festival was conceived to observe and celebrate June, which was designated as National Caribbean American Heritage Month by President George W. Bush in 2006. An estimated ten Caribbean films will be screened during HCFF, taking place at The Midtown Arts and Theater Center Houston (MATCH) June 9-11, 2017. At press time, confirmed films from Barbados, Cuba, Guadeloupe, Jamaica, Saint Lucia will be screened. The Festival will feature several full-length films and several short film which are 2-20 minutes in duration. The Jamaican film, Diary of a Badman will also be screened.

Other films scheduled to be screened includes: Barbados, H2O; Cuba, Tengo Talento ; Guadeloupe, Tourments d ’Amour ; and Saint Lucia, Who Are You? . Animated and several movie shorts will be featured at the HCFF in June. Films will be nominated and receive awards in several categories including: Best Foreign Language Film, Best Film Short, Best Animated Film, Best Documentary, Best Spoken Word.

The HCFF is dedicated to embracing and promoting the rich Caribbean culture through the eye of the director’s lens. The mission is to promote, support, increase and heighten interest and awareness of Caribbean films, filmmakers, screen writers, producers and directors in the Caribbean basin and the Diaspora year-round, focusing particularly in June, National Caribbean American Heritage Month .

The Grandson Of Reggae Legend Bob Marley, Heads To The NFL (@Nico2Marley)

Nico Marley (the grandson of Jamaican reggae legend Bob Marley) has been accepted into the NFL; America’s National Football League. Nico was signed by the Washington Redskins as an undrafted free agent after trying out for the team during its rookie minicamp over the weekend.

It is worth noting that his father, Rohan, was a linebacker at the University of Miami from 1992-1994.
