Winston Irie’s Story

Winston Irie is a Guyanese-born reggae artist whose music reflects the rich traditions of roots reggae and the spiritual consciousness that has long defined the genre. Born Winston Sumner in Golden Grove, Guyana, and raised partly in Seafield Village, Irie developed an early appreciation for music, inspired by encouragement from family members and the powerful sounds of reggae pioneers. His musical influences include legendary artists such as Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Jimmy Cliff, and Toots and the Maytals.

In the late 1970s, Irie migrated to Brooklyn, New York, where he began pursuing music more seriously. During the 1980s he performed with the band Black Gold Connections before later becoming associated with The Hot Heads, recording projects including Worldwide Vibes and Land Mine. Over time, he established his own group, the Selective Security Band, which has accompanied him in performances throughout the United States.

Throughout his career, Winston Irie has shared stages with internationally respected artists including Toots and the Maytals, Jimmy Cliff, The Wailers, Steel Pulse, and Lenny Kravitz. His music is known for blending traditional roots reggae rhythms with uplifting messages centered on spirituality, social awareness, and African consciousness.

Among his notable recordings are the singles “Orthodoxy” and “Unto Thee O’Lord,” both of which reflect the spiritual and cultural influences that shape his music. The song “Orthodoxy” also gained recognition on the Foundation Radio Network New York reggae charts.

With decades of experience as a performer and recording artist, Winston Irie continues to carry forward the message-driven tradition of reggae music. He is currently working on new music, further expanding his catalog while remaining true to the roots sound and positive messages that have defined his career.

Fans and supporters are encouraged to follow Winston Irie on social media, where he shares updates on his music, performances, and upcoming projects.
