The Caribbean has lost one of its most distinctive voices.
Mighty Sparrow, born Slinger Francisco in Grenada in 1935, died on September 27, 2026, in New York at the age of 91. Raised in Trinidad and Tobago, he went on to become one of the greatest and most influential calypsonians in Caribbean history.
Sparrow began performing as a young man and rose to prominence in the 1950s. In 1956, he won the Calypso King title with his famous song “Jean and Dinah (Yankees Gone),” launching a career that would span more than seven decades.
Through calypso, Sparrow sang about virtually every aspect of Caribbean life—politics, love, relationships, poverty, race, religion, social issues and Carnival. His songs could be humorous, provocative, political or deeply serious, often all at the same time. His sharp wit and remarkable command of language made him a favorite across the Caribbean and far beyond.
He recorded hundreds of songs and more than 70 albums, won the Calypso Monarch title ten times and the Road March eight times, and received some of the Caribbean’s highest honors. Among them were the Order of the Caribbean Community and Trinidad and Tobago’s Order of the Republic.
Sparrow also maintained strong musical connections throughout the region, including Jamaica, where he collaborated with bandleader Byron Lee. His recording of “Only a Fool (Breaks His Own Heart)” revealed his softer, romantic side and became one of his best-known songs internationally.
But Sparrow‘s greatest legacy may be the way he captured the spirit of Caribbean people. For generations, his songs provided laughter, commentary and a musical record of changing times.
His passing marks the end of an extraordinary chapter in Caribbean music. Yet the Mighty Sparrow‘s voice will not easily disappear. His songs remain, carrying the stories, humor and spirit of the people he spent his life singing about.
