New Dancehall Release: Likkle Lightning – Matey Laugh (@likklelightning)

Likkle Lightning - matey laughRoots Reggae singer Likkle Lightning is taking us back to when Dancehall was all about fun and good lyrics. In his new single ‘matey laugh’ Lightning is giving respect to the woman on the side that is well taken care of by her man. This kind of lyrical argument was, and still is, to a certain extent big in the Dancehall.

Ardent Likkle Lightning fans may be surprised by this record as the artist generally focuses on roots Reggae music. However, this is his way of showing that he cannot be boxed into any one genre. Listen ‘matey laugh’ here:

New Dancehall Release: Deep Jahi – Stepping Hard (@Deepjahi @streetdigital)

Deep_Jahi_Stepping HardIt is always refreshing to hear Jamaican Dancehall artists doing clean music. This is precisely what emerging artist Deep Jahi is doing on his new track ‘stepping hard’ which was recorded for Street Digital Records (a Canadian based record label).

The artist touches on some basic yet fundamental truths in this song. One particular line persons should pay attention to is the line that says; “the same little juvenile that grew up in the cruel slum, that you calling hoodlum & saying we only shoot gun, you gonna have to mute now, to the star is where we shoot now”.

Obibini & Michael Asambo

For the first time Michael Asambo, aka Da Biggest Boss, has invested in his passion, the show business. “Obibini & friends” is a novel act of Michael’s vision to showcase the best yet seen on the Ghanaian music scene. MJ Magazine was privileged to catch up with Mr. Asambo, CEO of Da Biggest Boss Promotions and Obibini, to get a gist of what the coming event was all about. The following is what they had to say.

MJ Magazine: Obibini & friends, what is the idea about?

Biggest boss: This idea is about pushing Obibini to the top. I am the type that pushes talent, and as someone who appreciates Obibini’s talent I thought it appropriate to showcase him to Ghana, Africa; and let the world know who Obibini is. The biggest boss sees OB as a unique artist; I am not just a fan of Obibini, but a part of his Boafo (helper) movement.

MJ Magazine: Is Obibini & friends a contract signed show?

Biggest boss: I thought about putting OB on a show, so I called him and asked to work with the team; I proposed to host Obibini & friends. So we planned it as friends do, to help each other without documentation.

Obibini-bashMJ Magazine: You have VGMA (Vodafone Ghana Music Awards) nominated acts on the bill, a second thing you would realize about the bill is its dancehall orientation. OB being a RAP artist, is it to give him a background that he can shine out of or what, why the kind of line up? Dancehall acts on a RAP headlined event.

Biggest boss: It is a street thing, this is a show to grow OB’s fan base. Most of the artists on the bill are artists I think have it. I did not want to have just RAP music on the stage, so we thought of broadening it, let everyone have their feel.

MJ Magazine: Are all acts confirmed?

Biggest boss: Yes all acts have confirmed.

MJ Magazine: A word from OB, how do you feel about the show?

Obibini Boafo: It feels great to be appreciated, thanks to the man them making it happen, Da Biggest Boss Promotions. It’s great, Obibini & friends, the title is sweet, I love it.

MJ Magazine: What would you say about the line up being Dancehall oriented?

Obibini Boafo: The idea is to steal the hearts of the streets, and to broaden our fan base. These acts are bringing their fans, it was going to take some time to get through to those fans, if not for this show. The man behind this event is the face of the street, it’s great, these dancehall acts are great and have great following.

MJ Magazine: We are here to bridge Africa and the Diaspora, what message do you have for the Diaspora

Obibini Boafo: We need them, they were and are still a part of us, we need to live life together; our own in the Diaspora should feel comfortable coming home, repatriation is a must! They taught us that in their music and we endorse it.

Come 21st March 2015, Keegee Hotel will witness what promises to be a memorable showdown of Real Rap meeting Dancehall, in a show dubbed “Obibini & Friends”. The “Wayuusu” hit maker would be supported by acts like Ras Kuuku, Episode, Hus Eugene, Luther, Konkarah, Chymny Crane, ShineyBoy, Agbeshi, King Vuvu, Maslarry, Owurah, Bastero, Gariba, Xpowa, Xblackson and many many more.

IRIE FM, CVM TV & other media houses facing charges of breaches of the copyright laws (@JACAPJAMAICA)

11Several media houses are now before the Supreme Court, facing charges of breaches of the copyright laws. The lawsuits were brought against them by the Jamaica Association of Authors Composers and Publishers (JACAP), which represents over two million creators of music worldwide, including over 3400 Jamaicans.

The media houses before the courts include CVM Television Limited, Nationwide News, News Talk 93 FM, Grove Broadcasting Limited (IRIE FM & ZIP 103 FM), KLAS Sports Radio and Island Broadcasting Services Ltd. ‘Cease and Desist’ letters have also been written to Love FM, Sun City Radio, Mello FM, Bess FM, KC Gospel and Mega JAMZ FM.

In a statement, JACAP General Manager Lydia Rose noted that “The creators of Music are unhappy with the illegal use of their works and have mandated JACAP to take violators to Court for infringement of their copyright.” JACAP, which was established in 1999, has to date paid out over 180 million dollars in royalties to its members. The writer is not always the performer and whereas artistes earn from performances, writers and creators of music earn primarily through royalties.

Under the 1993 copyright Act, all users of copyright music are required to get a licence for the usage of music. The JACAP GM said that after years’ of negotiating, several broadcasters still remain non-compliant, either making minimal contributions or refusing to sign a contract or make any payments. She further emphasized that users’ of music need to understand that the works/rights of the music creators must be respected as they are the foundation of the music industry and music events.

JACAP plans to file lawsuits within the coming months against cable and venue operators, promoters and hotels. Several meetings have been held with cable operators and their association, but most continue to breach the laws, gaining economic benefit from the unlicensed use of musical works. This, JACAP emphasized, represents blatant disregard for the laws of Jamaica and the creators of music.

The Association is adamant that it will not accept any handout as it values musical creativity, and will continue to act in the best interest of its members, while preserving the Jamaican Cultural and creative industries.

JACAP is a non-profit membership organization which collects licence fees from copyright music users and distributes the money as royalties to the music creators. A JACAP licence is a legal requirement that allows the legitimate use of local and international music in Jamaica while respecting the right of songwriters and composers to be paid fairly.
