Jamaican Music Ambassador Richie Stephens breathes new life into one of reggae’s most beloved classics with his stirring new interpretation of “The Girl in His Mind.”
 
Originally written and recorded by acclaimed American R&B singer Jerry Butler, “The Girl in His Mind” first appeared on his 1969 album The Sagittarius Movement. Five years later, the song found a new home in reggae through a timeless rendition by the late Jacob Miller, the charismatic original lead singer of Inner Circle, whose version became a defining classic within the genre.
 
Now, fifty years after Miller‘s iconic recording, Stephens offers his own interpretation, honoring the song’s rich history while introducing it to a new generation of listeners.
 
The release continues an impressive run of music from Stephens, following recent singles including “Wet Sugar,” a fresh take on Steven “Lenky” Marsden‘s legendary Diwali Riddim, and “Trapped,” his poignant January 2026 tribute to reggae icon Jimmy Cliff.
 
Adding even greater historical significance to the project is the involvement of legendary Jamaican guitarist and producer Earl “Chinna” Smith, one of reggae’s most influential musicians. Since the late 1960s, Smith has performed on more than 500 albums, collaborating with some of the world’s most respected artists, including Bob Marley & The Wailers, Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers, Dennis Brown, and Burning Spear.
 
Smith‘s influence extends far beyond reggae. His distinctive guitar work can also be heard on landmark recordings such as The Fugees‘ The Score, Lauryn Hill‘s The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, and Amy Winehouse‘s debut album Frank.
 
With Smith serving as producer, Stephens‘ version of “The Girl in His Mind” creates a powerful bridge between reggae’s foundational sound and today’s musical landscape. The song was released on streaming platforms on July 31, 2026, via Richie Stephens’ own Pot of Gold Production.
