Camoy Romaine Stafford was born and raised in Montego Bay, Jamaica. Growing up in the 90s and early 2000s in Jamaica, dancehall was a very prevalent part of the culture and it influenced Camoy from his childhood. He was always interested in dance, but got serious about it in the 9th grade. He would dance whenever he got the opportunity. Learning and creating dancehall steps, and also dancing with friends and choreographing routines. In this case he was a local street dancer, which is a huge part of Dancehall culture. His biggest influence from other street Dancehall dancers came from Andre “Cosmic” Elite, from the Elite Team in Kingston, Jamaica. Camoy saw Cosmic as unique and noticed how his moves were aggressive yet flow with the music effortlessly. Camoy also became very influenced by the hip hop dance style called popping, specifically by one specific dancer Marquese Scott. The influence Camoy received from Scott’s passion made him aware of the technique of animation within dance. Camoy worked hard on that technique, and it is now one of his biggest attributes in his personal dance style. He dances with strength, precision, and fluidity. Once he became aware of this he began recording videos of himself free-styling and uploading them on YouTube.
From 2014 to present day, Camoy has been a member of the performance group Mahogany Entertainment Network, directed by Brent Maxwell. They perform all over Jamaica for tourists, hotels, and special events. Styles include Jazz, African, modern, contemporary, traditional folk, and dancehall. The group has been recognized as the Most Outstanding Traditional Folk Group for more than 5 years straight and the Most Outstanding Dance Group in Western Jamaica for over 15 years. Apart from Mahogany Entertainment Network, Camoy has formed his own dance team in Montego Bay called the New Era Team. They have competed in Jamaican dance competitions like Dancing Dynamite, Tastee Talent Trail and JCDC. Camoy has also created his own dancehall steps under his New Era Team name, and dancehall lovers and dancers from all over the world (Sweden, South America, USA, and Germany to name a few) have endorsed his steps and incorporated them into their own routines and dance classes. The most popular steps he created are Shorta Breath, Snapshot, Pinch, Check and etc. Each step has a video on his YouTube channel, New Era, which anyone can watch and learn.
Camoy is so passionate about dance and it can be seen by everyone who he crosses paths with. His willingness and openness to teach and dance with anyone from any walk of life is an attribute that sets him apart from many. He is not driven by money, but driven by inspiration. He believes everyone has a story to tell and dance is an outlet for those who don’t otherwise have any other outlet. Camoy’s future plans are first to travel and dance in other parts of the world, and come back to Jamaica and open a dance studio in Montego Bay, creating a dancing hub and space on the Western side of the island the way Dance JA and Dance Xpressionz has done in Kingston.
Singer Richie Stephens (r) being interviewed by radio jock Waldiney of Rádio Mirante, FM 96.1, Brazil
Award winning reggae singer Richie Stephens has just wrapped production of a new music video for his single ‘Knock Knock Knock’ in Sao Luis, the capital and largest city of the Brazilian state of Maranhao.
The success of the song in Brazil inspired the singer to shoot the video with a local production crew. The video is currently being edited and will be available soon.
Prior to embarking on a mini tour of Brazil, Stephens got word that ‘Knock Knock Knock’ was a massive hit there. But as the old Chinese proverb says ‘Hearing a hundred times is not as good as seeing once’ and the proof was revealed when he arrived in Sao Luis for the first time on August 6th.
On his arrival in Brazil, he was whisked off to Rádio Mirante, FM 96.1 in Sao Luis to do an interview with radio jock Waldiney who was the first to play the song on the radio.
While in Brazil, Stephens headlined four shows – two in Sao Luis and two in Belem, the capital and largest city of the state of Para.
Asked about the success of ‘Knock Knock Knock’ in Brazil, when it is hardly played in Jamaica, Stephen explained, “For what I have observed, reggae music from the 70’s is what they love here in Brazil. They are into singers like Gregory Issacs, John Holt, Jimmy Cliff and Dennis Brown. ‘Knock Knock Knock’ has a taste of that smooth 70’s sound. In fact it was recorded on that 70’s rhythm that Horace Andy recorded ‘Love Of A Woman’ which is popular here. It may creep up on Jamaica like what OMI did with ‘Cheerleader'” he said.
Lady Donna on the set of ‘save a life’ video shoot
Dub Poet and roots Reggae artist Lady Donna who resides in the U.S.A, is currently in Jamaica shooting the video for her track ‘save a life.’ The record which is a collaboration with long time artist and friend, Alpancho, touches on the very serious issue of drunk driving. In the song both artists warns pedestrians to be mindful of irresponsible drivers; they also speak directly to the drivers encouraging them to make wise decisions when they are behind the wheel.
The video for ‘save a life’ was directed and shot by Maria Jackson Entertainment in Beverly, St. Ann. A great deal of effort was placed on ensuring that the story in the video is consistent with the message in the song. Powerhouse vocalist, Tessane Chin recently released the video for her latest hit single, Fire which has been blazing airwaves since its May 5 release. The video was premiered on Monday, August 10 on the popular internet site, YouTube and has since racked up over 10,000 views. The single, released on the Justice League Music Group Label, was featured as the soundtrack for the Jamaican songstress’ US ad debut for Clear Scalp and Hair in March. Since its release the single has gotten rave reviews with critics labeling it a modern twist of classic R&B.
The video can be viewed on Chin’s YouTube channel TessaneChinVEVO and features a classic rhythm and blues theme to match the original 1970s R&B sounding track. “It has a throw-back vibe which I think represents the feel of the song perfectly,” said director Nathan Patrick. Shot on location in Jamaica at the Terra Nova Hotel in Kingston, the video boasts scenes from the Regency Bar where Tessanne can be spotted giving a classic style ‘live’ performance. This scene more than anything illustrates the fun, empowering and soulful nature of the single, “It’s colorful and fun and brings attention to the music, it’s all about the music,” Patrick concluded.
Tessane Chin holds the single in high esteem as a mantra of empowerment and is confident that the video will help bring that message across.
“I want the video to represent the message of the song which to me is a modern day soulful power anthem without it being the typical boy girl scenario. Yes, I want it to be fun, but I also want to embrace the wonderful authority that comes from knowing yourself and your worth and owning your fierceness no matter who, what, where, when or how. Own your Fire,” said Chin.
Following her triumph in Season 5 of The Voice, Tessane Chin has been busy wooing fans with her powerful and dynamic vocals. Chin released her full-length album, Count On My Love in July 2014 on the Republic Records label and has not let up. Since then she has worked with top producers and writers including Supa-Dups, Rock City, Toby Gad, Claude Kelly and Grammy and Golden Globe Award winning songwriter, Diane Warren. Chin was also part of the White House special, Women of Soul Concert where she performed alongside legends such as Pati LaBelle and Aretha Franklin.
Along with the release of Fire, Chin has had a busy 2015 with several appearances including notable performances at the Daytime Emmy Awards in Los Angeles in April and the PBS National Memorial Day Program in Washington D.C. in May. The powerful vocalist also received raved reviews when she starred at the International Festival of Life, On July 4th at Union Park in Chicago, Illinois. The dynamic vocal songstress was again in for high praises as she headlined the Bayfront Reggae & World Music Festival in Duluth, Minnesota before she closed out July with a performance at the Pan-American Games, on July 23rd at the Nathan Phillips Square in Toronto, Canada.
