Reggae Month 2021 Goes Virtual!

Reggae Month 2021 activities, to be observed in February, have been moved to the virtual space.

The month-long celebration, being held under the theme ‘Come Ketch Di Riddim Virtually’, is expected to draws thousands of patrons globally to Jamaica, from locations as far as Europe and Asia.

Speaking during a virtual launch on Sunday (January 10), Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, Hon. Olivia Grange, said that the virtual celebration will enable people to “get together and feel alright, even from a distance”, as Jamaica “builds back stronger to a brighter and dynamic future”.

“After all, we are a people of a glorious ancestry, a people who have used the experiences of our past to create reggae music, whose rhythms the world recognises and loves,” she added.

Miss Grange said the Month presents an opportunity to further increase the capacity of Jamaica’s technical creatives through virtual workshops in areas such as sound engineering, writing and stage management.

She said that training opportunities and master classes in publishing and copyright for songwriters, musicians and artistes will be a feature of this year’s Reggae Month celebrations.

“We will promote strategic interactions among the world creatives through our online university. In this way, we will expand the dialogue on the needs of the creative sector as we continue to position Reggae among the world’s most vibrant brands,” Minister Grange said.

February was officially declared as Reggae Month on January 9, 2008. This annual observance highlights and celebrates the impact of the musical genre on Jamaica’s social, cultural and economic development

New Dates For The Jamaica Jazz & Blues Festival

The return of the Jamaica Jazz & Blues Festival, which was previously scheduled for the end of January, 2021, has been pushed back to March 4th through 6th.

It will still be a free virtual event, although the organizers have included a charity element enabling persons to donate to workers in the entertainment industry whose jobs have been wiped out due to the covid-19 pandemic.

The reason for the change in date is due to the rapid spread of the coronavirus in the United States. Apparently they are hoping to add more American-based artists and the current state of the virus is making it difficult.

Reggae Man Wormbass Embraces Afrobeat On His Latest Single “Follow You”

Wormbass, the veteran bass player who gained notoriety as an instrumental member in Beenie Man‘s former Blaze Band, has for the past few years been focused on his own career as a recording artist. The multitalented musician and producer has demonstrated that he just may be more adept at writing and singing, than he is at playing the many instruments that he commands.

As he readies himself for the release of his album – scheduled for Summer 2021 – he is sharing the second single from that upcoming project. Done on an afrobeat rhythm, “Follow You,” which is the song’s title, should be rightfully classified as a Rastafarian praise and worship hymn. As Wormbass correctly states, the sound of the afrobeat is a reminder of the cultural foot steps of Kumina born in his birthplace of St Thomas, Jamaica.

The creation of “Follow You” was a team effort. First and foremost it was produced by Wormbass (whose birthname is Delroy Nevin) and Kemar ‘Khemis’ Campbell of Vybnation Records. Musicians that contributed to the production included: Matthew Jacquette on guitar and Sly Dunbar, who added some overdubs. Different parts of this track were recorded at various studios, namely: Vybnation Records, Bear Fruits Records and One POP Records.

With the release of the song, Wormbass is making it clear “that there is still a Creator, who inspite of all the disarray that the world is experiencing is very much present and available to help us throughout each of our trying days.”

Karamanti Releases Video For “Genesis 19” Following Multiple Setbacks!

Last year, shortly after the release of her reggae single “Genesis 19,” Karamanti attempted to shoot the video for the song on three separate occasions, but was derailed each time.

The first disruption came after the two initial scenes were captured – that of the dancer and guitarist – and it was time for Karamanti to shoot her performance scene. She immediately began exhibiting signs of the corona virus, which resulted in a halt in production allowing her to quarantine for the required number of days. Once she had gotten over covid-19, nature prevented the production from restarting as Jamaica was experiencing ongoing heavy rainfalls, putting a stop to any outdoor activity. And finally, after all the clips were recorded the editing system crashed!

Not being one to give up, the artist and her entire team regrouped after each setback and went at it again. Notwithstanding, the official video for “Genesis 19” is now out and can be viewed on her YouTube channel.

Capleton Leads The Upcoming Raised Riddim With “Ah No People Dem Love” (@capletonmusic)

On February 12th, Krak In Dub – The Argentinian producer who is based in France – will be releasing the Raised Riddim. The twelve-track reggae compilation will feature new music from some familiar voices: Beenie Man, Johnny Osbourne, Tiger and Capleton. It will also have some names that may be new to ardent reggae supporters this side of the globe.

Leading the project is non other than the fireman, Capleton, with an aggressive yet factual chant titled “Ah No People Dem Love.” King Shango continues to use his music to burn the fire on things that he disagrees with. On this particular record it’s the choosing of money over people.
