2019 Essence Festival - Day 3The Bay Area’s throw back station, Q102.1 FM, will be hosting a concert dubbed ‘Hot Summer Night’ on Sunday, September 1st. The event, which will be held at the Concord Pavilion (2000 Kirker Pass Rd) in Concord, California, will feature performances by Blackstreet, Ginuwine, SWV, Dru Hill, Guy, 112 and other popular R&B stars from back in the day.

The show will run from 4 PM to 10:30 PM and tickets, which start at $26 USD, can be purchased via livenation’s website.

vp summerstageIt’s been 40 years since Vincent and Patricia Chin set up VP Records in Jamaica, Queens; the success of that shop would prompt them to found VP Records, now one of the most important sources of reggae and dancehall music in the world.

To celebrate, VP hosts a showcase with some of its illustrious alumni: Elephant Man, whose 2003 hit “Pon di River, Pon di Bank” and collaborations with Wyclef Jean and Busta Rhymes helped further blur the lines between dancehall and hip hop; Junior Reid, the former Black Uhuru vocalist whose 1989 classic “One Blood” has spawned countless remakes and interpolations; Estelle, the genre-bending, Grammy-winning English singer best known for her Kanye West collaboration “American Boy” and now has her own album, Lover’s Rock, with VP; and Grammy-nominated Raging Fyah, a five-piece band from Kingston, Jamaica that makes music bound to the roots rock reggae tradition.

The event will take place at Summerstage Performance Venue (Central Park) in New York on Saturday, August 10th from 5 to 10 PM.

Tucked away in Tryon, North Carolina, is the humble home where Nina Simone developed her love for the piano. Despite its history, the home sat vacant until 2017 when four artists purchased it and saved it from demolition.

Today, with the artists’ guidance, the National Trust for Historic Preservation is working to create a vibrant future for the site, but they need your help! Join their campaign to ensure that Nina Simone’s childhood home is preserved for future generations.

Singer / songwriter Bilal will be doing three back to back sets at Oakland’s popular live venue, Yoshi’s, this September. The artist is confirmed for two sets on Saturday, September 14th (one at 7:30 pm and the other at 9:30 pm); with an additional set on Sunday, the 15th at 7 pm.

Philadelphia’s Street Renamed To Honor R&B Legend Patti LaBelle (@MsPattiPatti)

A couple weeks ago Philadelphia’s Broad Street, between Spruce and Locust, was renamed Patti LaBelle Way. The renaming was done during the Wawa Welcome America Festival, and it was done to honor the legendary singer’s accomplishments and ties to the city.

Patti LaBelle has won two Grammy Awards and is considered the godmother of soul. In addition to her singing career, LaBelle also has a successful line of cakes and pies.
