“I can’t breathe.” These were the last words of George Floyd, a 46-year-old Minnesota man, a beloved friend, brother, and coworker.

Floyd, a black man, died on May 25th, 2020, at the hands of police officer Derek Chauvin, a white officer who used his knee to pin Floyd’s throat to the ground, choking him beyond motionlessness for over eight minutes, despite Floyd’s cooperation and desperate pleas to live. Three other officers – Tou Thao and two unidentified officers – backed Chauvin up and held Floyd down while bystanders screamed, filmed, and begged the officers for mercy on behalf of Floyd, to no avail.

George Floyd was being arrested for potentially using a counterfeit bill for groceries. Police video shows that he did not resist arrest.

The four officers have been terminated by the Minneapolis Police Department, but this is not enough. We are demanding the attention of Hennepin County District Attorney Mike Freeman and the immediate arrest and second degree murder charge of all four officers involved in this senseless and merciless killing.

Floyd passed away shortly after three (3) white police officers held him down, with one kneeling on Floyd’s neck for approximately 8 minutes and 46 seconds. A fourth officer looked on and did nothing even as George repeatedly said he can’t breathe.

People were hurt and angry once the video hit social media, but their anger turned to rage as the authorities are slow in arresting the four police officers. Only one has been arrested at the time this article was written.

Poet & Artist, Sunni Patterson, Releases New Pan-African Music “Ancestor Song” (@SUNNIPATTERSON)

sunni pattersonA few days ago, American poet Sunni Patterson, who is also known for her musical skills, shared a new song entitled Ancestor Song.

This is how she described the track:
“Patterned after the hymn, Precious Lord, Ancestor Song pays homage first, to my own personal Ancestors, then to the collective Ancestors that guide, protect, and support our lives. I wanted this track to be as organic as possible, using what was around me…my hands, my ring tapping the mic stand, a spoon and bowl, an orange juice bottle, etc. I knew I needed my god sister, Jew-el, to bless the piece with her magnificent voice, and my dear Baba Egunwale’s prayer (that he just left on my voicemail. lol. Ha! Blessings all around!) to enhance it, as well. I actually recorded this over a year or so ago, and still this isn’t the “final” version, but I was compelled to share it- as it is.”
