Since 2008 when it was first announced that February will be dedicated to the celebration of reggae music and all its sub-genres, this time of year has arguably become the busiest for persons within the music industry in Jamaica.
The festivities kicked off on Saturday, February 1st with two events: 1) the first of six free ‘Children of the Icons’ concerts in Sam Sharpe Square, Montego Bay, which featured performances from the offspring of some of Jamaica’s greatest performers, as well as several emerging artistes; and 2) ‘Remembering Dennis Brown’, a gathering at the resting place of the icon to commemorate his 63rd birthday.
On Sunday, February 2nd both the Ministry of Culture and the Jamaican Reggae Industry Association (JaRIA), once again asked Fellowship Tabernacle to host this year’s Church Service to officially launch Reggae Month in Jamaica. A number of special guests were in attendance and the service, which started at 10:00 AM, was open to the general public.
The Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sports, the National Gallery of Jamaica (NGJ) and the Jamaica Music Museum in association with La Philharmonie de Paris are now inviting the public to visit the Gallery all month long to check out the Jamaica Jamaica Exhibition! This exhibition brings together rare memorabilia, photographs, visual art, audio recordings and footage unearthed from Jamaica’s best museums and most elusive collectors and studios, while collaborating with legendary local visual artists to convey the essence of a true Jamaican music experience.
A couple of other noteworthy events that will take place all month long are: JARIA Reggae Wednesdays (live performances from various established and emerging artists at Emancipation Park every Wednesday) and JARIA University (an opportunity to learn more about the music industry every Thursday). Ibru, who is rapidly becoming the face of reggae and dancehall in the Bahamas, has been widening his fan-base since he released his EP in December. The record, which is titled “I’m So Focused,” is a six-track fusion of dancehall, pop and reggae all combined.
After getting a favorable review from Shereita Grizzle of the Jamaica Star, Ibru and his team were able to attract the likes of Sizzla Kalonji to make a guest appearance on the project. The Star, one of Jamaica’s most respected nationwide newspaper, cited Ibru as the “Bahamian artist ready to take on Jamaica.”
“I’m So Focused” was officially released on December 20th, 2019, via the Kohanim Records label. It can be streamed and downloaded from all digital music platforms.
The 2020 staging of the annual Rainforest Seafood & Music Festival will take place on Ash Wednesday, February 26th, at the Catherine Hall Entertainment Center in Montego Bay from 12 noon to midnight.
This year’s lineup includes: Romain Virgo, Luciano, Agent Sasco, Ding Dong, Marion Hall and others; with hosts Miss Kitty and Dufton.
The Royal Air Forces Association (Jamaica 580 Branch) will be hosting dancehall artist Agent Sasco, along with some of his friends, at Curphey Place – The Ex-Services Club – in Kingston, Jamaica on Friday, February 7th.
This is a benefit concert created to support veterans and their families. Pre-sold tickets are going for $2,500 JMD.
On Ash Wednesday, February 26th, Team Unstoppable will host the 2020 staging of ‘Trelawny Me Born & Grow’. This year’s lineup will include: Richie Spice, Terry Linen, Shudly, Darrio, Kemar Highcon, Little Hero, Kevin Downswell and Mr. Unstoppable himself, Charly Black.
‘Trelawny Me Born & Grow’ is a family fun day that will run from 11:00 AM to midnight. In addition to the live performances, they will also have bounce-a-bout and merry go round for the kids. Advance tickets are going for $1,000 JMD for adults and $500 for children.
A couple days ago Karamanti shared the official video for her song “It’s Up To You,” which is featured on her recently released album “Hurt People.” The visuals were strategically released at this time in an effort to combat the ongoing domestic violence cases happening across the island. Since December 31st, the murders of three women, all with their lovers implicated, have made headlines.
Karamanti wanted to take this opportunity to encourage both women and men, who are in abusive relationships to get out now while they still can. The very graphic images in the video tells the story of a jealous, abusive, insecure husband who consistently beats his wife.
The video was shot and edited in Kingston, Jamaica by Maria Jackson, and it stars actors Carl Parker and Shernette Williams.
