Andrew Holness Ends Campaign With Heartfelt Letter [Must Read]

00-Andrew JALast night, Andrew Holness, leader of the opposition, ended his campaign with a heartfelt letter to his supporters. He wrote:

Friends,

We have begun an incredible journey together. I have enjoyed the questions, advice, and comments about our vision. I am inspired by your commitment for a better Jamaica. I have no doubt that our best days are in front of us.

I know you can feel the change in the air. Yet, do not leave this election to chance because no matter how much we engage on Facebook, nothing matters unless you turn your comments, shares, and likes into votes. Do not let your voice be silenced by staying home. We cannot allow this journey toward a brighter future end tomorrow. This is our time to lead.

So, get up early, grab neighbours, and head to the polls. We have a lot of work to do together in our partnership for prosperity. I thank you for all your support and I humbly ask for your vote.

Andrew

Black Tech Week Recap

00- Black Tech WeekBlack Tech Week has wrapped in Miami, with nearly 1,600 attendees from across the country and beyond, having passed through the 2nd annual event devoted to technology, entrepreneurship, creativity and more.

From sessions on funding start-ups, to youth functions and a women’s innovation brunch that closed the summit, participants expressed enthusiasm about the thought-provoking dialogue experienced at this cultural conference. That dovetails with the vision of event co-founders Felecia Hatcher and Derick Pearson who aim to move the needle forward in terms of growing Black entrepreneurship in the tech sphere.

The conference, sponsored by Knight Foundation, Dell and others, was held primarily on the campus of Florida International University, and was complemented by another tech confab last week hosted by Power Moves, a national initiative to increase the number of venture backed minority businesses in America.

Black Tech Week attendees also participated in a chat with the team from the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for African Americans. Panelists included the head of that endeavor, David Johns, who called for an increase of STEM education in communities of color.

And White House staffer Marvin Carr, Ph.D., a technology policy advisor who is also part of President Obama’s ‘My Brother’s Keeper’ efforts, took part in a session that focused on opportunities for ex-offenders in the tech arena.

Audley Shaw Writes Letter to Electoral Comission of Jamaica Regarding Fake Electoral ID Cards (@JLPJamaica)

ecjlogoOpposition Spokesperson on Finance & Planning, Audley Shaw, wrote to the ECJ earlier regarding the manufacturing of fake Electoral ID Cards. The letter is as follows:

Hon. Dorothy Pine McLarty
Chairman
Electoral Commission of Jamaica

Dear Mrs Pine Mclarty,

Re: Reports of Illegal Production and Distribution of Fake Identification Cards to persons for the purpose of Voter Impersonation.

I have received several disturbing reports of the existence of portable ID card making machines being used to make and distribute fake electoral ID cards, which are apparently to be used illegally by persons who will attempt to vote tomorrow in the name of dead and migrated people who are on the voters list.

You are aware of my often expressed concern both in parliament and in meetings with the ECJ, about the large number of names of dead and migrated persons on the voters list, while I have steadfastly maintained presents the increased potential for electoral fraud through voter impersonation.

I have been equally troubled and find it quite omnious that the Government has been silent on its failure to issue the necessary warrants for the budgeted expenditure to be made by the ECJ to clean up the voters list.

The silence of the Government on this matter, combined with the reports I have received of this illegal production and distribution of ID cards, leads me to place the ECJ and every well thinking Jamaican who wishes to protect our democracy, to be on high alert to ensure that voter impersonation with fake ID cards does not happen in tomorrows General Elections.

Accordingly, I now formally request that the ECJ and the Director of Elections immediately take immediate preventative actions to block any such egregious act at our polling stations tomorrow.

Specifically; steps should be taken to; (1) Instruct all Presiding Officers to look out for these fake cards and ensure strick adherence to the use of the black book for a positive identification of the elector and ensure that the person is not in fact an impersonator. (2) Ensure that the Presiding Officer give indoor agents full access to the black book to satisfy the agents of the positive identification of the elector. (3) Take steps to refer any such attempt at voter impersonation to the Police so that the perpretrator can be arrested for the commitment of an illegal act.

I have brought this matter to your attention as in the absence of a clean reverified voters list, all necessary steps must be taken by the ECJ to uphold the principle of free and fair elections.

Yours respectfully
Audley Shaw

cc. Mr. Orret Fisher
Director of Elections.

Selector Rory From Stone Love Sound Excites Audiences In Japan (@rorystonelove @StoneLoveMusic)

00- Rory Stone LoveWhen giant sounds with a fond love of the culture come together during a rare occasion, the result can only be music magic. To put it mildly, this is what went down in Japan recently when Mighty Crown teamed up with Rory Stone Love to take it “Back to the Hardcore” before thousands of fans during sold out shows in Yokohama and Osaka!

It’s very seldom that these prominent sounds share the same stage. In fact, historically, for 10 years (due to pretty well known behind the scenes mix up), the two sounds did not take dates together, with the exception of a couple of surprise/happenstance billings staged by a promoter. The beauty of “Back to the Hardcore” is that “The Far East Rulaz” and Rory Stone Love put all beef aside for the greater good of the music and culture, delivering outstanding performances to massive Japanese audiences.

With a focus on the phenomenal era of 80’s and 90’s tunes, a vibrant time for Reggae and Dancehall, Mighty Crown drew for some real dubs and classic 45s, setting the pace for the one and only Rory Stone Love to unleash killer anthems. The young and old shouted out lyrics to their favorite selections verbatim. It’s a no brainer, that classic Dancehall is Rory’s strength, so without question, the selector received forward after forward for slinging unforgettable tunes and riddims.

Mighty Crown launched “Back to the Hardcore” more than 15 years ago as a platform to educate fans on Reggae and Dancehall music. One night while playing, Sami T was approached by a young audience member who innocently asked “What is the Showtime riddim?” Add a few similar inquiries from young fans to this equation and there spawns “Back to the Hardcore.”

Notably, Sami T pinpointed the need to bridge the generation music gap. “Back to the Hardcore” was typically billed for artists until Rory’s breakout performance this year. In addition to stops in Yokohama and Osaka, “Back to the Hardcore” also made a sold out stop in Nagoya.

Millitant Biography (@millitantmusic)

00-millitantMillitant is a self taught recording artist, producer, engineer and song writer who is currently signed to the Manchester based record label, Whatage Music.

Oliver Garfield Carby, more popularly known as Millitant, is the first of twins, born on the 30th of June in the year 1987. Though he was born in Kingston, Jamaica, he grew up in Portmore, St. Catherine, where he attended Rehoboth Basic and Independence City All Age Schools. At the age of seven, his mother, who was a song writer and a lover of music, moved to Top Hill, St. Elizabeth. There he attended the Top Hill Primary School and B.B. Coke Comprehensive High School. He also attended the Junction Vocational Training Centre in St. Elizabeth where he studied carpentry and received a level one certificate.

Millitant’s introduction to music came through his mother. He used to sing along with her at home until he built up the courage to perform one of the songs she wrote at his Primary School. After receiving a favorable response from the students and teachers, his path was decided.

Once he got to high school he started writing songs and performing for small audiences on a regular basis. The feedback from his friends motivated him; hence he recorded his first demo and began to take his career as an artist very serious. At the time he called himself OJ (O for Oliver, his first name and J for Junior which is from his father). The name Millitant came later when a rhythm driven project entitled Military Riddim was released by Renaissance and it was suggested that he changed his name to Millitant. As time went on he began to pay attention to, and pull inspiration from more established artists like Bob Marley, Sean Paul, Beenie Man, Vybz Kartel and Bounty Killer. As he got more involved in the industry, he taught himself how to make beats and mix songs. He became very optimistic about advancing in the music business and very confident that he would take his career to the highest level. Armed with encouragement from his family and friends, Millitant persevered, never losing faith even when the future looked dim.

In 2015, Millitant met Courtney Johnson, CEO and producer at Whatage Music. Courtney heard his songs, recognized his talent and decided to enter into a production and management agreement with him. Since signing, Millitant has released a mixtape and several singles, namely: “Hell Already,” “Jam World,” “Be Strong,” “Be Sure,” and “Music & Melodies.” He is currently working alongside Courtney to promote the aforementioned tracks.

Persons wanting to work with Millitant in any capacity are being asked to contact Whatage Music via email at whatagemusic@gmail.com or call (876) 347-1766.
