The Jamaicans Abroad Helping Jamaicans At Home Foundation to Host Mission for Change 2017

jahjah-foundationFrom Jan. 16 to 21, 2017, the JAHJAH Foundation will host Mission for Change 2017, a six-day event to help provide better care for under served Jamaicans. With over 20 American medical volunteers available for support, the organization hopes to raise money to support the Mission For Change 2017. We are asking for support to raise $12,000 for young athletes from local high schools to receive free premium, life-saving medical screening procedures.

“Bob Marley was one of the first men who said … ‘my life is for everybody. And if my life is only for me, then I wouldn’t like my life.’ And I can say that I feel the same way. My life is for everybody,” passionately says Trevor Dixon, MD, RDMS, Founder/CEO of JAHJAH Foundation.

Following recent sport-related fatalities among young Jamaican athletes with undiscovered heart conditions, the One Love One Heart project provides free echocardiogram and EKG tests for these students. The JAHJAH Foundation is looking for sponsors to help these athletes receive critical tests. The organization hopes to fund 100 tests, each costing $120, all proceeds will go to cover the cost of the free echocardiogram and EKG test.

From Manchester, Jamaica to Dortmund, Germany, Keith ‘Roughhouse’ Powell has emerged a dynamic, multi-talented performer in the music industry. His father, Keith Powell Snr, played guitar for reggae legends Bunny Wailer, Dennis Brown and with Lloyd Parks & We The People Band. Raging Fyah’s Grammy Nod is Well Deserved (@Ragingfyah)

Story by: ©Sheron Hamilton-Pearson

raginfyahIt seems like a fairy tale – one short year after their NYC debut at Brooklyn’s Milk River as part of VP Records’ Dub Rockers imprint launch – Raging Fyah recently received the heady news of a nomination in the category of Best Reggae Album at the 59th Grammy Awards for their 3rd album Everlasting. Are they fazed by this news? Not really explains lead singer Kemar Bent who was accompanied by musical director, singer and keyboard player Demar Gayle at the VP media event held in Queens, NY on one of the coldest days so far of 2016.

Articulate, earnest and humble are just some of the adjectives that come to mind after spending time in the presence of two members of the five piece Raging Fyah Band. They are not new kids on the block as some would imagine, having put in the proverbial ground work; collectively and individually; backing dance hall notables like Vybz Kartel, Gyptian Cherine Anderson, Gregory Isaacs and Anthony B among others. Dissatisfaction at this secondary role and confidence in their ability to make the kind of music they wanted to hear led to the launch of their career as a performing band in 2008. The young men are all graduates of the revered Edna Manley College, with a veteran performer as the fifth member. They age in range from 28 year old lead singer Kemar “Kumz” Bent to 65 year old lead guitarist, veteran Courtland “Gizmo” White. Not content to just release quality products, in 2010 they conceptualized and executed the annual Wickie Wackie Music Festival held in Jamaica’s 8-mile Bull Bay area where incidentally Chronixx (then known simply as Jamar) made his first public performance! Hailed as part of the so-called resurgence in roots rock reggae this band has certainly piqued interest and has fans wondering if they are the new standard bearers of live authentic roots reggae music.

At pains to point out the incredibly hard work they’ve undertaken since 2015, in their first US tour, they performed in 34 cities, supporting American reggae stalwarts Stick Figure, an experience which both Kemar and Demar describe as extremely hard work but one that has its rewards in the opportunity of connecting with a diverse audience whose common thread is the love of roots music. 2017 looks to be just as hectic, with a short break in Jamaica for Christmas the band will set off again from January 24 through March 15 with Tribal Seeds on a 45 show tour. They will also perform with UB40 in the UK. An impromptu live acoustic set with Kemar accompanied by Demar on keyboards on “Splash” and “Ready for Love” was the perfect ending to an intimate and relaxed session and enforced the reasoning behind this band receiving a nomination to the Grammys.

Whether or not they win the Grammy, Kemar Bent, Demar Gayle, Delroy Hamilton, Anthony Watson and Courtland White, collectively known as Raging Fyah have already won, they’ve won and are winning the hard-earned respect of reggae purists by performing quality roots music with innovative and thoughtful lyrical content, but more importantly, they are achieving their goal of demonstrating that reggae is not just a three-chord musical expression; but by incorporating their knowledge of Beethoven, Bach and the classics learned at Edna Manley; they are composing roots reggae music innovative and timeless in nature, but still true to its origins – the heartbeat of Jamaica.

Despite what you are hearing Sting will take place this year! (@ReggaeSting)

Christmas in Jamaica, is synonymous with cake, sorrel, Grand Market night and Sting! For 33 years this event has been the most anticipated in the Dancehall space across the Globe. Sting represnets the hottest fashion, the latest dances, the controversial clashes, the “bussing” of artistes like Buju Banton; global superstars like Busta Ryhmes, Notorious BIG and Wyclef performed there on Jamaica visits. Ninja Man’s lyrical brawls, the Bounty vs Beenie Man and the Kartel Movado verbal war, the welcome home of Super Cat, all these are historical moments not only in the history of Dancehall but of the island of Jamaica.

Some thought that such history would be interupted this year but the opponents and fighters of Dancehall can’t celebrate just yet because Supreme Promotions promoters of Sting have teamed up with House of Dancehall, the hottest venue in Kingston right now, to put together probably the biggest celebratory Dance in the history of Jamaica on Boxing Day Tuesday December 27th, for Sting 33: A Tribute to Dancehall.

It is well known that this has been one of the toughest years for Dancehall. With two of its greatest still behind bars, the music was banned in Croydon, England, influential persons in Barbados and even Jamaica started initiatives to ban and get rid of the genre. Spice came under attack for performing her regular routine in front of politicians and dignitaries and the nations’ telephone directory was frowned upon because it had a picture of a dancehall scene on the cover.

However, like the Jamaican people, Dancehall is strong and resilient, and one of the great icons of Dancehall, Sting, despite being frowned up on by the sponsors and the powers that be who are determined to kill the one night “ghetto people” and Dancehall fans look forward to, has managed to Re invent itself into One World Sting where the brand will be taken across the world, with the Event on the 27th being used to show the world that Dancehall with its clashes and controversies, is here to stay.

House of Dancehall’s CEO, Michael Dawson, did not mince words when he explained why his Company got involved : “This is a celebration of our music, not the corporations’ music, the music that we, mainly poor people pickney in Jamaica love and enjoy and grow up with. But it is used, abused and discarded by Corporate Jamaica and they think they could take our biggest night away by taking away their financial support. I am sick and tired of people beating down Dancehall, so on December 27th we are going to celebrate it and celebrate it big with one of its biggest icons Sting….and we are celebrating everything about it…the fashion designers, the food, the drinks, the dancing, the sexy ladies but most of all, we are going to celebrate the music.”

This format of Sting will be held at 6 Cargill Avenue at the Whirlwind Entertainment Complex, there will be a stage for live performances by upcoming and past Sting performers, guest selectors and sounds systems that have played at Sting over the years, dancers, cabanas, ultra VIP room for high end patrons with Lobster tail and shrimp, and a whole lot more. “We are going to show the BIG MAN in Jamaica that the little man don’t need his money, we can support our own thing if we unite and defend our music and culture.“
