Don’t it by Karamanti retired as a hit after spending 8 weeks in the #1 spot on Toronto’s Rebel Vibez Chart

Karamanti’s single “don’t it”, which was produced by Ricardo RedBoom Reid from Hard At Work Music has been, and is creating waves in Canada. The song which was released at the end of 2011 began to capture the attention of several radio disc jocks in Ontario early last year. Don’t it entered the Rebel Vibez chart in the 4th quarter of 2012 and slowly climbed its way up to number one, where it remained for eight long weeks (the longest time a song is allowed to stay in that position).

Though “don’t it” has now been officially retired from Rebel Vibez top 10 chart, it is currently on the top 10 of Up North Chart, hosted by DJ Wiz on the Wizology show on CHRY 105.5 FM (Toronto) as well as on the Soul Rebel Show which airs on CHRW radio 94.9 FM with DJ Royalty (London, Ontario). The song is also getting regular rotation on radio and in clubs in parts of Quebec, Ottawa and Vancouver.

The Dancehall Industry Speaks Out Against Illiteracy And Mental Stagnation Amongst Black People

NY & Read Video Shoot 063

It was not so long ago that international recording artist Sizzla Kalonji released the track entitled “learn to read”. In the song he advised the youths to learn to read and write and elaborated on the importance of education so as to not be deceived. Fast forward a few months later and dancehall artist Karamanti is releasing the video for her single called “read”.

Much like Kalonji, Karamanti’s song addresses the matter of illiteracy but she goes a step further by encouraging persons who are able to read to do so more frequently. She equates the increase in negative images and messages in the music industry with the makers and promoters refusal to expand their minds via reading.

The video which was shot in the Cassia Park area in Kingston starts out with a dramatization of a man behaving infuriately because of his inability to read. He is then confronted by a young lady who explains that it is never too late to learn and that she would be willing to teach him. The video has several still images of messages supporting reading and its importance.

Sizzla Kalonji, Khali Taylor & Karamanti’s Christmas Message

With only a day or so before Christmas, record executive, Ainsworth Dixon, CEO and president of Lexzona Production (based in Kingston, Jamaica) decided to have a few artists record a Christmas message to his Good Better Fresh Rhythm (produced by Ekwality). The artists selected were Sizzla Kalonji, Karamanti and Khali Taylor. The result is nothing short of controversial as Sizzla bahses Santa, Karamanti lashes upper class Jamaicans and Khali basically separates himself from Christmas.

Jamaica is still the home of Roots Rock Reggae, thanks to veterans like Mikey General

Mikey General - African Story African Glory

If you are one of those who believes that Jamaica no longer produces authentic roots rock reggae music, you need to get a copy of Mikey General’s latest album, “African Story, African Glory”. The album was released on December 7th on his Qabalah First Music Label and it’s his 11th studio recording. African Story, African Glory displays the best of Mikey General, from his vocal reach to his song writing abilities, all are paraded on this 16 track CD.

In conventional style, Mikey’s introduction is a prayer spoken in the Ethopian tongue, Amharic. Immediately after track one he goes right into tracks two through sixteen with no interludes just nonstop music. As expected most of the songs are of a spiritual nature giving praises to the Most High God while others highlights the importance of African people knowing themselves and their history. Guest appearances are made by Toussaint, Lutan Fyah and Ifa Tunde.

Though a couple of the songs seem to have been recorded abroad, most of the album was produced in Jamaica, the home of Reggae music. Executive producers are Michael Taylor and Lloyd Stewart. African Story, African Glory is distributed by High Power Music Inc and can be purchased at Ernie B, CD Baby, I-tunes and all major music outlets.
