Jamaican Publicists and Promoters are scamming upcoming artists & producers – Be Careful

00-scam alertA couple weeks ago two separate cases of scamming came out in the news. First was from a female reggae artist living overseas who was apparently ripped off by two prominent music publicists here in Jamaica. And the second was from an emerging male artist who was misled by a local radio personality/promoter. In both cases the artists lost so much money that they made the incident public.

Normally we would not write about this type of thing, but because people also reach out to us to assist in their promotion/publicity, it was absolutely necessary that we use the opportunity to differentiate ourselves from the scammers.

The first and probably most important thing for people to know about Maria Jackson Entertainment is that the company is owned by an artist and it is operated by regular music professionals: DJs, artists, poets, event promoters etc. That being said, we are all disgusted whenever we hear of these incidents. In the past we use to collaborate with radio personalities here in Jamaica to facilitate our clients who wanted radio promotion. We had to put a stop to that because the radio DJs were not properly promoting the songs they were being paid to push. The situation has gradually deteriorated to where it is now… blatant scamming!

MJE has been around since 2007 and we have never had one report of scamming or anything of that nature made against us. As a matter of fact we have always gone over and above to please our clients. And I am sure they will testify to that. Visit our website at www.mjent.net to learn about who we are and what we do.

The Jamaica Coalition for Tobacco Control (JCTC) favors recent tax increase on tobacco (@TobaccoFreeJA)

00-tobaccoToday the Jamaica Coalition for Tobacco Control released the following statement:

The Jamaica Coalition for Tobacco Control (JCTC) commends the Minister of Finance, Audley Shaw, for increasing the excise tax on tobacco products. The increase was announced by Minister Shaw in Parliament on May 12, 2016. The Special Consumption Tax (SCT) per stick will move from $12.00 to $14.00, a 16.6% increase.

The increase shows that the Government of Jamaica continues to be committed to meeting its treaty obligations, under the World Health Organization, Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO/FCTC), particularly Article 6, which seeks to use taxation as a price measure to reduce the demand for tobacco products.
Research from dozens of countries, including Jamaica, clearly shows that increasing the real (i.e. inflation-adjusted) price of tobacco is the single most effective measure in reducing tobacco use among youth and adults alike.

Unfortunately, the recently announced adjustment of the SCT to $14 per stick falls short of bringing Jamaica to the current best practice recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) of at least 70% of the price of the product being due to taxation. Therefore, the JCTC encourages the Minister to make this the beginning of a stepwise increase in tobacco taxes in the interest of meeting both public health and revenue targets. In addition the JCTC recommends that the Government of Jamaica adjust the SCT on an annual basis to ensure that, at a minimum, the SCT increases by the inflation rate.

Globally increasing taxes assist Governments in recouping some of the tremendous cost of the health burden of tobacco use, encourages smokers to quit and others never to start and most importantly makes the product less affordable to the youth, often the target of tobacco industry’s advertising and sponsorship.

The JCTC is not surprised by the continued efforts of the tobacco industry to, in its self-interest, use the threat of illicit trade in lobbying against effective tobacco control policies. However, the actual evidence worldwide points to issues of corruption and border security as the real determinants of smuggling, rather than increased taxes. In fact, some of the European countries with the highest tobacco taxes have the lowest levels of illicit trade.
The JCTC believes the Government of Jamaica and the Jamaican Customs Department have taken the issue of illicit trade in tobacco products very seriously and have been taking steps to identify illicit imports and stem the flow of both counterfeit and contraband products.

We encourage the Government to continue the drive to bring the tax structure on cigarettes in line with the established best practice and recommendations of the FCTC and also to move ahead with plans for comprehensive tobacco control legislation, to protect our citizens from the devastating health and financial consequences of tobacco use.

The fourth annual Caribbean Healthy Families and Fathers Conference 2016 will be held in Kingston on June 21st and 22nd

African father helping son with homework

Fathers & Families Coalition of America, a United States-based nonprofit organization is preparing for its fourth annual Caribbean Healthy Families and Fathers Conference 2016 in Kingston. The two-day event will be held on June 21st and 22nd.

The motive of this conference is to reemphasize the purpose of ‘Fatherhood’ and improve the relationship fathers have with their children. This being due to the absence of the traditional family unit that not many children are able to experience within the Caribbean. This event will deliver empowering and uplifting programs that can teach persons how to successfully execute their role as not only a father but as a role model. These are factors that will help with a child’s self-esteem and also give them a sense of purpose and belonging.

Jamaica holds generations and generations of absent fathers; which unfortunately has formed a stigma of being acceptable. This crucial dilemma is extremely overlooked and this conference will be able to make a difference. The growing trend throughout all the Caribbean of homes with children under 18 raised by mothers alone is a contributor of poverty, increased juvenile incarceration (and adults in prison), children in orphanages and child welfare-systems, low educational and vocational attainment of young adults (18-26), increased teen pregnancy and reduced long-term financial positive growth for Jamaica and other Caribbean sister nations. Dr. Roger Ball, Fordham University (native of Jamaica), Mr. Sheldon Smith, Loma Linda University (native of Jamaica), Professor Edwin Gonzalez Santin, Arizona State University (native of Puerto Rico) and other Caribbean rooted presenters as well as from the United States will provide training for parents and professionals over the 2-days…”This conference will help us bring services to children who have voids in their lives due to the absence of fathers,” said Dr. James C. Rodriguez. The President and CEO of the Fathers & Families Coalition of America and supporter of the Jamaica Affiliate points out that the gift of fatherhood is not often used to its full potential for children, families, and communities. Proceeds that will be collected from the Fathers & Families Coalition of America conference will go to benefit a local orphanage within Kingston and help to improve their conditions.

The prolific event will involve numerous workshops directed towards the development of the strong relationship that connects a father to their family. The topic of men being very quick to be fathers but not taking the roll as seriously is not heavily discussed here in Jamaica and has quite frankly continued to be the norm. This is an event that is very needed within this country and is a perfect opportunity for Jamaica and the rest of the Caribbean to truly tap into all of what makes a father the key to a child’s development. Highlighting the attributes of being a provider, protector and supporter. The conference will be held at the University College of the Caribbean (UCC) at 17 Worthington Terrace, Kingston 5, Jamaica.

JAMAICA TOPS BEST SMALL HOTELS IN THE CARIBBEAN LIST

00-rockhouse2

Negril’s Rock House Hotel

Coming on the heels of Jamaica being named third best island in the world on the Trip Advisor 2016 awards list, the island also dominates the category of Best Small Hotels in the Caribbean 2016. Jamaica not only tops the list but she also holds down the number 2, 4 and 6 slots on the best of 25. Amazingly, three of these four properties are located in Port Antonio. They are #1. Trident Hotel in Port Antonio, # 2. Resort At Wilks Bay, Port Antonio, #4. The Spa Retreat Boutique Hotel, Negril and #6. Geejam, Port Antonio.

Other beautiful and outstanding Jamaican hotels too have been included on other top 25 lists for the Caribbean. Among them, Rock House in Negril, voted as the # 5 on the Best Hotel in the Caribbean category, and Iberostar Grand in Montego Bay, Sandals Royal Plantation and Jamaica Inn in Ocho Rios voted as top regional luxury resorts.

Jamaica scored very well too on the section of Best Bargains in the Caribbean with the inclusion of Seastar Inn, Negril, Blue Cave Castle, Negril, Travellers Beach Resort, Negril, Negril Yoga Centre and Chrisanns Beach Resort, Ocho Rios all listed among the best value for money bargains in the Caribbean.

Special mention must be made of The Spa Retreat Boutique Hotel in Negril. In addition to being the #4 Best Small Hotel, the property is also #2 on the list of hotels providing the best service in the Caribbean and #5 for the Most Romantic Hotel in the Caribbean!

The spectacular showing of Jamaica as the third best island in the world competing against 32 Caribbean destinations and thousands of exotic places globally is a declaration of the strength of Jamaica’s tourism product. Still, I was a little disenchanted that the island did not appear on the list of top restaurants, with gems like The Sugar Mill in Montego Bay and Push Cart in Negril building a loud in buzz.

If the beautiful island of Tobago does not appear on any of the rankings, the new rising star is Grenada, sitting pretty in the top half of several lists. Nevis is in the mix too, as is Antigua & Barbuda with the exciting Galley Bay Resort. Surprisingly, Puerto Rico is barely on the radar of excellence and Cuba is just beginning its journey up the all-inclusive charts with great promise for the Varadero region for next year.
