DA COUNSELLOR’s Biography (@dacounsellor4)

00-counsellor1Oral Robinson, professionally known as Da Counsellor, was born on the 26th of April 1969. He grew up in Race Course, which is located in Grange Hill, Westmoreland with his mother, three brothers and three sisters. His father died when he was three years old. Da Counsellor’s love for music came from a form of genetic transition as he is the nephew of the late Jacob “Killer” Miller. Therefore music was embedded in his heart and soul.

Da Counsellor is a singer, a DJ, a songwriter, a music producer and a contractor. His belief is that the true beauty of music is that it connects people, it carries a message and musicians are the messengers. Da Counsellor is a God-fearing person who centres his music on Biblical perspectives and social phenomenon that can uplift, inspire and motivate ones way of life. That is why he is called Da Counsellor.

Music was not his only passion as he also has a love for construction. Since his youth, Da Counsellor was very knowledgeable about the difficulties involved in breaking into the music industry. He resolved at an early age, to not put all his eggs in one basket, so to speak, instead, he focused simultaneously on his job as construction worker and his career as a recording artist.

Upon leaving high school, Da Counsellor knew that he had to do something in order to generate income for his dreams to become a reality. Hence, his second passion of construction work came into play. At age 16 he worked at construction sites in Westmoreland and neighbouring parishes. Da Counsellor is an optimistic individual and it is said that optimism is the faith that leads to achievement and that nothing can be done without hope and confidence. At the age of 19 Da Counsellor save the money he had earned and bought a plane ticket to The Cayman Island where he hoped to find more consistent work. He did not get a job there at the time and so he ended returning to Jamaica. Not being one to give up, he soon tried looking for work in Panama and Curacao before going back to The Cayman Island where he did eventually get a good job. He currently travels back and forth between Jamaica and The Cayman Island where he is now a permanent resident.

Working in The Cayman Island, Da Counsellor was able to acquire the money needed to set in motion his dreams of becoming a recording artiste. In 2001 he went to the United States and did the Recordings for his first album which was entitled “God A De Number One”. It got good radio rotation in both Jamaica and The Grand Cayman. From there his musical journey started; he did shows in the United States, The Cayman Island and Jamaica. Although his musical career started to excel, he never gave up his second passion of construction work. He manages to balance both of them equally.

Currently Da Counsellor is working on releasing a new album entitled “You Going To Lose,” which he produced himself. The album features a collaboration with iconic Dancehall/Gospel artist Lieutenant Stitchie. A video was done for the title song “You Going To Lose” which was shot and edited by Jermaine Edwards . The tile of the album “You going to Lose” speaks of how men ought to treat there wife, which is of a respectable, loving and caring manner. If they fail to do so as the title suggest they are going to lose.

DONNA BURNETT aka LADY DONNA biography (@LaDona6 @OsujahRecords)

Microsoft Word - DONNA BURNETT aka LADY DONNA biographyDonna Burnett is a dub poet, writer, record producer, registered nurse, CEO and founder of Osujah Records and Charity Outreach Program.

Born at the historical Jubilee hospital in Kingston, Donna is the only child for her mother Rosamund Sayles. She grew up in Jones Town, bordered by Trench Town, Admiral Town, and Hannah Town in Kingston 12. Donna lived in other areas in Kingston like Harbor View, Patrick City, Portmore in St Catherine, but she always returned to her roots in Jones Town where her great grandmother, Aunt B resided. Donna was captivated by music at a very early age and was inspired by the musical talents of Aunt B, who played the accordion or flutena as she called it, when she sang and danced. Donna shared aunt B’s passion for music as well as her compassion for those who suffered. Together they ministered to the needy, sick, and hungry in the community, which included people as well as animals. Aunt B adopted a sickly infant “AJ” born to a mentally ill and homeless woman. AJ was the closest Donna came to having a brother. Mrs. Ivy, Donna’s grandmother, played the piano and sang soprano in the church choir. Her uncle owned a sound system “Touch of Class.”  Surrounded by adults, in a strict environment, Donna was often lonely and listened to music, wrote lyrics, poetry, sang, DJ’d and read extensively. English was her best subject.

Donna Burnett attended Queen’s High School, in St Andrew, and worked at the Ministry of Education at National Heroes Circle upon graduation. An avid fan of Bob Marley, she was deeply saddened by his death in 1981, and attended his viewing at the National Arena in Jamaica, where she paid her last respects to the Jamaican Icon. Donna was impressed with the Rastafarian movement at the time but never wore dreads or considered Haile Selassie as God. Donna was a firm believer in the Christian religion; however, she was more of an opinionated radical. In 1985, shortly after the birth of her first child, Donna migrated to the United States. She served in the US Navy as a Hospital Corpsman and Pharmacy Technician for 11 years. She obtained a BS degree in Nursing from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, where she also pursued classes in music, poetry and writing. Donna also works as a Registered Nurse.

Determined to finance her own Record Company, due to unequal opportunity for women in the Music Industry, Donna opened her first studio at her home in Beverly, St Ann, which she later moved to Main St. Priory, St Ann. She chose St. Ann because it was the birth place of her great grandmother, as well as that of the legendary leader, and National Hero, The Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey, another of Donna’s literary mentors. She also loves being close to the ocean.

The name Osujah was inspired through a prophetic vision with the divine revelation of her calling as a Levite, as can be noted in Joshua 21 of The Holy Bible. Joshua has been scrambled to create Osujah. Donna intends to be a driving force to be reckoned with in upcoming years, providing the medium through which voices can be heard and represented, where the lost can be lead, the hungry fed, the needy satisfied, and the broken mend.

Osujah Record’s latest project is a Reggae compilation entitled ‘Vybz In The Sun.’ It features two tracks from Lady Donna, namely; ‘Reject Failure’ and ‘Save A Life’ which features Alpancho. Persons wanting to work with Donna may do so by sending an email to osujah21@yahoo.com

This is the Music Industry not a sport, why are you competing?

0So the music industry has two different images, there is the image that you see when you are on the outside looking in. To many this either looks glamorous or difficult depending on whether or not you are trying to get your foot in the door. Maybe if you are a religious person it may also appear negative and dirty at times. The other image is the one that you see when you are inside the music business and you know a lot of the artists, producers and A&Rs personally and are around them when they speak professionally and socially.

When you are on the inside one thing becomes apparent; that is those who are doing music for the love of music and are not competing for status placement appear to be less stressed and somehow they seem to be loved and appreciated more by the public as oppose to those who get involved in the music industry and focus all their attention and energy on being bigger than others. Artists, Producers, Label Owners, Booking Agents, PRs and other professionals in music that are working in their respective fields because they want to work in that particular field and genuinely enjoy what they do and are not in competition with anyone tend to have a unique likeability about them. Persons seem drawn to them and they seem to get countless opportunities that allows them to continue to soar. More importantly they make decisions about their career from the right place and not a place of wanting to be above anyone. I believe with all my heart that the reason why so many urban music posters, flyers, CD covers etc. all have half naked women on them, and why calling our daughters, mothers and aunties a bitch has become the norm and why the overall lyrical content coming from youths today is not inspiring and uplifting is all because everyone is busy competing with everyone else. No one is making their decisions based on what they truly want to do. They spend all their time watching what others are doing and then tell themselves that they have to outdo them.

Unfortunately the persons involved in the urban music industry (hip-hop, reggae, dancehall, soca, R&B etc.) seem to be in constant competition with one another. It is said that ‘both the dancehall and hip-hop culture strives on competition and so it is necessary in these genres’. I fundamentally disagree with that statement! My position is that if each of us spend our time thinking, planning creating and executing ways to advance our careers then we will not see the need or even have the time to worry about what others are doing thus being unable to see them as competition. As for competing lyrically, I am an avid lover of both hip-hop and dancehall and history has taught me that not a lot of good can come from competing lyrically, yes it may be very entertaining to onlookers but have you ever stop to think about what it’s doing to the person in the competition?

In the interest of time I will close this article by saying that each one of us has unique talents and abilities that was given to us by the Creator therefore the only person we can and should compete with is ourselves. And we do that by challenging ourselves to become better every day.

I sincerely hope that this was useful to you.

WILD AXE Biography (@officialwildaxe)

Jamaican Dancehall Artist Wild Axe Bio & New SingleAs an adolescent growing up in the Waterhouse Community in Kingston, Jamaica, Ryan Bennett was afforded a lot of freedom. His mother migrated to the UK and so he was left in the care of his godmother who did not stop him from attending all the talked about events in his neighborhood. It is because he was constantly going to street parties and socializing that persons began calling him ‘Fyesta Wild Axe’, a name he later shortened to ‘Wild Axe’.

Wild Axe initially had no interest in being a recording artist; the desire to pursue music as a career came by chance when he was asked to assist his friend in the studio by going in the booth and simply checking the mic. From that point on he began writing lyrics and paying attention to other artists whom he looked up to. Some of his biggest musical inspirations are Bounty Killer, Bob Marley, Dennis Brown, Buju Banton and Beenie Man.

Four years after his mother left Jamaica, he also got the opportunity to do the same and so he joined her in England and began to settle into what would be considered a normal life; this included studying computer IT at Lewisham College. Fortunately, he could not shake his desire for writing and performing music and so in 2010 he began to refocus his energy and once again started to compose songs. He then returned to Jamaica and immediately invested both his time and financial resources into what he now considered his full time occupation. By then he had a manager, Charmain Scott, who encouraged him to record with Smoothface Production, which is based in the UK and both Digitalize Records and Control Tower Squad, which are based in Jamaica. The collaboration with these record companies produced several tracks that helped to create massive awareness for Wild Axe as an artist. He did songs like “Hot Steppa” on the 100 Degree Rhythm compilation which also featured well known acts like Popcaan and Demarco. Once that record was released Wild Axe and his team began to promote the track aggressively as they were getting a lot of positive feedback from his fan base. Other songs that helped to propel him in the limelight are “Money Mi Want” and “Happy Life” which he did a video for. Watch the official video for “Happy Life” here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=kGPLAdGcXkY

Wild Axe is currently getting ready to release his first EP. It will feature the three previously mentioned songs as well as others, and it will be distributed by 21st Hapilos (one of the most acknowledged distributors in Dancehall). Press Fyah’s Biography (@PressFyah)

1

Press Fyah was born Conroy Rennis in the parish of Portland (Jamaica). He grew up with both parents. As a child his hobby was football and he played so well that persons in the community assumed that is what he would pursue as a career. He also envisioned himself playing in England because as he puts it, he was too shy and lacked the self confidence to be a music performer. Conroy played football for his school, community and even his parish, he played at all, except the national level.

His desire for football subsided in 2003 after he got a job as a fire fighter and realized that there was just no time in his scheduled for soccer. While at work, he began writing music during his lunch hour. It was while doing this that he slowly began to embrace the idea of becoming a recording artist. After sharing his songs with someone from his community, he was introduced to a bunch of guys that was supposed to assist him in improving his craft. Instead he ended up forming a group with them and they became known as Space House. Unfortunately, the unit did not achieve much success so Press Fyah continued to work as a solo performer even though he maintains a solid relationship with the group. As far as the genre of music, he did both Reggae and Dancehall but placed more emphasis on Reggae.

Before joining up with Space House, Press Fyah did not have an official artist name he was still being called by his pet name, Troy. While with the group he began calling himself Xpress but soon learnt that another artist was already using that name and so he had to abandon it. When he entered the Magnum Kings and Queens competition in 2009 he used the name Fire Press, something his friends called him because he is a fire fighter. But once General Degree (one of the judges on Magnum Kings and Queens) heard him he suggested that he changed it around and so he did. In that year Press Fyah was selected only for the live show portion of the contest, he did not go any further.

Feeling more confident, Press Fyah re-entered the Magnum Kings and Queens competition in 2010. He was not sure if he would win but thought that the publicity would get him connected with music industry insiders. But to everyone’s surprise, including his own, Press Fyah won and was crowned the 2010 Magnum King of Dancehall! He was simply elated at the victory and to this day he refers to that as one of his greatest achievements.

Alas, the winning of the Magnum crown in 2010 did not translate into a recording or management contract. Press Fyah remained an unsigned artist and so he committed to pushing his music independently, something he continues to do even today. His catalogue includes “far away” on the Starkutt Record Label (Demarco), “close to me” a Sajay Production, the Rainfall Riddim Compilation by Good Good Production, and that is just to name a few. His most recent release is a single entitled “road users” which is on the Charlie Pro Record Label. All his songs are available online for streaming and download.

Zayne’s Biography (@Zaynemuzik)

zayne-youtube

Like many other artists before him, Dwayne Haase, more popularly known as Zayne, started off singing on the church choir. As a young man, Zayne spent a significant amount of time in the Portland community of Jamaica with his grandfather who owned a sound system, something that Zayne found quite fascinating back then. Whenever the opportunity presented itself, he would play around on his grandfather’s sound, singing over various record versions. He also spent a lot of time singing in youth groups and at Sunday school but he eventually transitioned from gospel to more secular genres. His musical inspiration came from artists such as Buju Banton, Jah Cure, Sizzla, Bob Marley and other culture based Reggae and Dancehall performers.

Zayne had an interest in aircraft engineering and felt that when he got older he would become either a recording artist or an engineer. His pursuit for a degree in aircraft engineering landed him at the Nation Aviation Academy in Tampa, Florida. While in Florida, he began to realize that he was on his way to accomplishing one of his dreams (becoming an aircraft engineer) but the other (becoming an artist), was being neglected. So by 2009 Zayne started to take frequent trips back to Jamaica where he connected and worked with established producers such as Red Boom, Digital Sham and others, all this while simultaneously performing on stage shows in and around Florida.

He has recorded several singles such as “my hero”, “strip tease”, “party in JA”, “look how long” and that is just to name a few. The record that has gotten him the most attention to date however is entitled “energy up”. Since its release, Zayne has gotten a lot of feature on music blogs and radio stations across America, Africa and Jamaica. The songs popularity also resulted in him being interviewed on Randy’s radio (New York), Boston 87 FM (Boston), Zip FM (Jamaica), Vibe 103 FM (Atlanta), Irie 98.3 (Bermuda) and many others.  Zayne has done work with the following record labels; Frenz For Real, Hard at Work, Money Green, Anthony Records, First Name Music, Claims Records and Digitalize Records. He has shared the stage with some of the biggest acts in the Reggae/Dancehall industry, one name worth highlighting is Mavado. Zayne songs are featured on many mix tapes by some of the most popular DJs in the industry; DJ Junky, DJ Kenny, DJ Dotcom and DJ Scary Gary.

Having now relocated back to Jamaica, Zayne’s focus is entirely on his career as a recording artist (though he has a degree in Engineering). With the current buzz that he is getting, he plans on capitalizing on it by releasing an EP called “Bloody City” in March 2015. Additionally, he will be working on a lot of singles all of which will be released periodically throughout the year.

Zayne is not signed to any record label or management company but he is represented by First Order Production. Anyone wanting to work with him may contact Camille Cole via email at firstorderproduction@gmail.com or via phone at (876) 296-4916.

Fans and supporters of Zayne’s music are encouraged to follow him on social media so that they can be updated on his career.
