Who is really responsible for the negative music coming out of Jamaica?

Dancehall singer Lady Saw performs at the Sting 2013 concert in KingstonIf you are a lover of Jamaican music by now you would know that there is a lot of talk about how negative Dancehall has become and how there is a “re-emergence” of real Reggae. Most Jamaicans will tell you that Dancehall music is now at a place they never thought it would be and they would go even further to say that they do not support these new acts that are behind the negativity. Funny enough, you can catch these same persons sharing videos and news stories via the internet about the very “artists” they believe are destroying the music.

Images of Gage and Alkaline for example performing at events where women are seemingly doing oral sex to their music is shared over and over online by the very same people who say that these things are not good for the genre. One would think persons sharing music, pictures and videos online would know that right now that is arguably one of the best promotional avenues for artists and musicians. Whenever you share things on the internet you are in fact promoting the person or persons involved in whatever is being shared.

002So who is really responsible for the negative music coming out of Jamaica? Is it fair to say that the answer is any and everyone that is online sharing (and promoting) the artists that make these music?
